30 Best & Most Androgynous Anime Characters

30 Most androgynous anime characters. The anime world has no shortage of androgynous, gender-ambiguous characters.

Does the number seem to be growing rapidly in recent years– reflecting changing attitudes toward gender identification?

Or maybe it’s just that more artists are trying their hand at drawing pretty boys who look like girls but still have boy parts (and they are flirting with the idea of gender-bending). There’s a healthy market for that, you know.

30 Most androgynous anime characters Name

1. Nagisa Shiota from Assassination Classroom

Nagisa can be classified as a pretty boy, which has become a common practice among mangaka in recent years.

The term is used to describe male characters whose features are soft, feminine or lady-like. Pretty boys aren’t just aesthetically pleasing.

They usually have fantastic outlooks and personalities. In addition, they are often very nice to look at and easy on the eyes.

If you think this sounds familiar, you’ve likely seen a lot of pretty boys in harem anime! As for Nagisa, he has pink hair (which is typical of pretty boys), an effeminate voice, and a slender body type.

In addition, his outfits are very feminine, and he even has long skirts. Like many teachers in anime, Nagisa is strict when he needs to be but compassionate most of the time.

2. Shion Sonozaki from Mawaru Penguindrum

The first thing that probably comes to mind when you see Shion is a pretty boy. He has feminine features, like pink hair and doe-like eyes.

However, the other half of his gender ambiguity comes from his androgynous name – it could be read as either male or female!

Shion also has a slender body type and long hair, both of which are pretty boy aesthetics. He could also be considered effeminate in how he speaks and acts. However, there’s no clear evidence to support this observation.

3. Haruka Nanase from Free! – Iwatobi Swim Club

Like Shion Sonozaki, Haruka is a person whose gender has been questioned by many viewers. However, unlike Shion, Haruka’s ambiguous appearance is due to his tomboyish looks.

Free! Creator Kōji Ōji has stated that Haruka was originally supposed to be a girl and the other four main characters (aside from himself) are male.

As the story progressed and the creation of a female diver was considered, “she” became Haruka. This doesn’t mean that Haruka is actually male; it is simply a design choice.

4. Saika Totsuka from Yowamushi Pedal

Saika Totsuka is a rather mysterious character. He has heterochromia, meaning that he has one brown eye and one blue eye, much like Guy Fawkes. This gives him an eccentric appearance, but many viewers greatly admire his coolness.

Even from the beginning of the anime series, there are hints that Saika may be more feminine than his appearance suggests. For example, in episode 14, when a group of girls ask for Takakuni’s picture on their cell phones after encountering him in the hallway, they notice that Saika looked just as beautiful as Takakuni.

5. Crona from Soul Eater

Crona seems to have no gender. Crona was raised by Medusa, a witch whose mere gaze can turn humans into stone. This explains why they wear an eye patch over their left eye to prevent the effects of Medusa’s power from taking hold of them.

In episode 20 of Soul Eater, it is revealed that Crona’s body is that of a girl named Risa Misaki, who had been given the name “Crona”. However, when we see Crona wearing only undergarments, there are two things worth noting: First, their chest area looks flat;

6. Envy from Fullmetal Alchemist

Envy is the fourth homunculus created by Father. She is a shell of Lust, Gluttony, Pride, and Wrath in that order.

However, after being injured during her battle with Scar in the anime series, she appears similar to Alphonse Elric. Since then, she refers to herself as a “big brother.”

7. Haku from Spirited Away

Why this character is androgynous: Haku, the boy with no name in Spirited Away, is one of the most well-known characters on the list.

A mysterious figure which appears before Chihiro Ogino and his new friends during her journey through the spirit world, Haku at first seems to be an ordinary boy. However, it is eventually revealed that he is a river spirit.

He helps Chihiro escape from Yubaba’s bathhouse by guiding her to Zeniba’s old house to learn how to break her contract with Yubaba. Once there, he gives his body up so that she can go on without him.

8. Yuuya Bridges from Gundam 00

He’s the one on the far right in the image. His voice actor, Kenichi Suzumura, was also Kira Yamato from Gundam Seed/Destiny (which I love!).

But, there’s no denying it – Yuuya is beautiful. Out of all the characters, he has my fav eyes and nose with slightly thinner eyebrows than most other male anime guys.

9. Kiba Ohsawa from Mawaru Penguindrum

Another older series but there are no recent pictures of him online so here goes! On a side note, I would like to mention that I have seen the latest episode of Gundam Build Fighters and saw both Kira Yamato. Shinn Asuka’s voice actor, and Kiba Ohsawa in it! The latter was eating ramen with one of the main characters.

10. Yuu Sakuragi from Sacred Seven

The 2nd season didn’t do him justice, but he looks much better with short hair than long hair. He’s shown here with his friend Miki Tatara, another minor character, but she’s also pretty cute…isn’t she?

11. Orochimaru and Kabuto from Naruto

I have an unhealthy (but totally justified and canon) affinity for Orochimaru in particular, hence why he features so prominently. I like his snake-like face with wide eyes and long eyelashes, as well as his short hair. I also love how green his chakra is. X3

12. Ash Ketchum et al. from Pokemon

Charizard is my favourite starter Pokémon – good luck beating a fire-breathing dragon! Here’s a picture of Ash Ketchum doing what he does best: catching them all! He’s not actually my type, but it would be wrong to exclude him because…well, just look at him. He’s adorable 😛

13. Rin Okumura from Ao No Exorcist

Another anime on the action end of the spectrum, Rin, is an exorcist who can’t even control his own powers, yet he still wants to help everyone. Just look at that scared expression and those watery eyes – it’s no wonder I’ve fallen for him!

The guy on the right is Okumura Yukio (Rin’s adoptive father), and yes, he’s not bad looking either. Miyuu Sawai voices both characters.

So while I love her voice, I think they should have switched up her roles? I mean, she sounds like Shiro from Free! When voicing Yukio but does sound a bit more manly as Rin. Anyway, moving onto the next one 😛

14. Griffiths Eikichi from Kuroko No Basket

I was on the fence about whether to put Eikichi in here because he’s not considered good-looking by many people (especially his long-nosed face). But for me, I guess because I’m in love with this character and no matter how manly or ugly they make him look.

It just doesn’t matter! Eikichi is an awesome character :D. He’s one of the first characters we meet and knows most about basketball out of the entire cast. However, his personality is what attracted me to him too – loud, boisterous and kind-hearted!

Toshihiko Seki does an absolutely fantastic job voicing him. Another reason why I was hesitant to include him here is that he’s more of a side character (not main/lead), but I don’t care! He’s still an awesome guy :D.

15. Armin Arlert from Attack On Titan

He and Mikasa are probably my two favourite characters out of the whole show xD. Both are blonde, both cute faces…the one on the right has tiny eyes, though!

Anyway, let’s talk about this precious boy first. With this anime, it’s easy to tell who is gorgeous and who isn’t because they all have a human form and look like normal people (unlike Bleach, where they’re in spirit form!).

Armin…has some girly looks to him, but he’s still quite cute. I love his hair and how it was an anime-original thing that he gets it cut in the beginning. He’s got a kind stare too! His voice actor, Yuki Kaji, does a brilliant job with his performance as well.

16. Uryuu from Bleach

He’s not my favourite character overall in this series (I actually like Renji and Byakuya more). Still, I do enjoy watching him fight :D. Also, he is part of one of my favourite trios ~ Grimmjow, Ichigo & Ulquiorra.
